The 2024 Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) Annual Collection has been unveiled, celebrating the pinnacle of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Now in its third year, the Collection provides wine enthusiasts an opportunity to explore a diverse array of styles, each shaped by the unique sub-regions and the winemaking expertise of Marlborough.

“AMW’s Annual Collection continues to recognise and celebrate world-class Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc,” says Michael Wentworth, CEO of AMW. “The 2024 Collection highlights our member’s dedication to quality, expression of our region’s unparalleled terroir, and to winemaking craft."

This year’s collection was judged by an esteemed panel, including Stephen Wong MW, Elaine Chukan Brown (Wine Enthusiast), and Paul Stringer (Moore Wilson), bringing global expertise across education, media, on-trade, and retail sectors. "We are thrilled to have worked with such a distinguished group of judges," says Mike.

The panel evaluated over 75 current vintage Sauvignon Blancs, selecting a top 12 that reflects the region’s unique vineyard sites and winemaking styles. Chair of the judging panel, Stephen Wong MW, remarked: “2024 was a solar vintage with very expressive but also beautifully balanced fruit. The wines have breezy ease and effortless drinkability, even this early on. When making the selection, the judges found it hard to ignore the charming 2024 expression even if the standard of many 2023 wines in the 'alternative' category were impressive. From what we tasted, producers should be proud of how complex and sensitively handled many wines.”

Appellation Marlborough Wine is excited to announce Michael Wentworth as its Chief Executive Officer. Michael’s appointment commences on 15 April, 2024 in what is a new position within the member-led organisation.

With global recognition of Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) on the rise, the recruitment of a Chief Executive Officer was deemed essential to the organisation’s continued success. “AMW is the future of Marlborough’s wine industry. Our members are leading wine growers with a long-term commitment to protecting and enhancing our region,” says AMW Chair, John Buchanan. “Our board was unanimous in its decision to seek out an exceptional CEO to support our efforts and drive the organisation forward.”

Michael Wentworth will be a familiar face to the New Zealand wine industry, and beyond. He brings a wealth of experience to AMW, with over 20 years of working directly with NZ wineries including sales, marketing, operations and sustainability roles. Michael’s education underpins these credentials, with diplomas in Wine Business and Wine Sensory Analysis as well as a Bachelor of Horticulture (Hons).

“What Appellation Marlborough Wine has achieved in a few short years is phenomenal,” says Michael. “Their single-minded focus on protecting and enhancing Marlborough’s wine quality is to be admired. I am really looking forward to working alongside many of the region’s flagship wine producers and elevating their collective efforts globally.”

Since its establishment in 2018, AMW has continually refined its architecture. “We have worked inherently to strengthen AMW’s position as the quality mark for Marlborough wine,” says John. “Our membership now exceeds 50 wineries and our certification program incorporates all varieties grown within the region.”

In 2022, AMW introduced the Appellation Marlborough Wine Annual Collection. “It’s a celebration of Sauvignon Blanc,” says John. A blind tasting is undertaken by three impartial judges before a selection of 12 Sauvignon Blancs is made. “The aim is to highlight the quality and distinctive flavour on offer when you choose 100% Marlborough.”

Last year, AMW announced the release of the Wine Map of Marlborough. Created by the Marlborough Wine Map Collective and gifted to AMW and its members for their use, it is the first map of its kind for the Marlborough grape growing region. “It is a vital resource in understanding the subregional detail and diversity of Marlborough,” says John. “We are proud to make it available to the wine community via our website.”

“Up until this point, AMW’s growth has been rather organic,” says John. “We’ve made significant in-roads with wine buyers and enthusiasts over the past few years and it is critical that we capitalise on this momentum. As CEO, Michael will be well placed to assist us. He has a diverse and savvy skillset and we are thrilled to welcome him to the team.”

The 2023 Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) Annual Collection has been selected. This year’s highly experienced panel - Jane Skilton MW, Erin Larkin and Andrea Martinisi - were given the daunting task of assessing over 70 new release Sauvignon Blancs before determining a unanimous top 12. The resulting collection is a celebration of Marlborough’s diverse landscape.

“AMW’s Annual Collection is an opportunity to recognise world-class Sauvignon Blanc," says AMW chair John Buchanan. “Our recent collection tasting highlighted that AMW producers are refining their house-style whilst exploring in parallel Marlborough’s sub-regions and single vineyard sites. The 2023 Annual Collection is a clever reflection of our dynamic wine growing region and is an attractive range of expressions and price-points.”

The AMW Annual Collection is selected by an independent panel of three, following a robust blind tasting of submitted member wines. The expertise of this year’s judges traversed the industry; including wine educator, media and on-premise. “We were thrilled to have such a distinguished panel determine our 2023 Annual Collection,” says Amanda McRae, AMW executive officer. “The judging process was a pleasure to witness. The professional approach, cohesive processes and collegial respect was admirable.

“I enthusiastically accepted the AMW Collection panelist role because Marlborough wines have always fascinated me,” says Andrea Martinisi. “It was a chance to explore the best the region has to offer - and Erin, Jane and myself, had the privilege of tasting wines that were both traditional and avant-garde, reflecting the region's spirit.”

“Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc captured the attention of wine enthusiasts around the world because of its exceptional sense of place. It is critical that grape growers never assume this position lightly,” says John. “Our collection tasting is an important exercise in peer benchmarking and it was interesting to see three wines included for the second year running.”

“In a relatively short time, Marlborough gained global recognition for creating superlative Sauvignon Blanc,” says lead panelist and Master of Wine Jane Skilton. “As the Marlborough industry strengthens (and in no small part consolidates) it is important to shine the spotlight on those upholding the core values of NZ wine.”

Andrea says the AMW Annual Collection will continue to motivate Marlborough winemakers to push boundaries and share their expertise. “It will also help to preserve and protect the great reputation that Marlborough has gained globally as a quality wine growing region.”

“Marlborough has the distinct potential for a detailed tapestry of terroir driven wines,” says Erin Larkin. “A kaleidoscope of individual house styles from estate to estate across the region, and a strong message to convey about the capability of Sauvignon Blanc particularly, to convey site, place and maker. This will ultimately be the basis for the Marlborough fine wine story in the future, all of which was abundantly clear to me in my week of visits and tastings.”

AMW’s Annual Collection has a halo effect on the entirety of its membership. The 12 wines selected to comprise the 2023 collection range from $17 to $36 (NZ) and encompass a broad range of winemaking techniques, from 100% stainless steel through to wild fermentation and extended barrel aging.

“Last month’s collection tasting revealed that Marlborough retains its tradition of producing exemplary Sauvignon Blanc but isn't afraid to innovate or explore alternative styles,” says Jane. “The 2023 Collection shows that every producer is capable of making wines to the highest standards.”

Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) is excited to announce its Annual Collection tasting will take place on Wednesday, 27 September. Introduced last year and warmly received by wine enthusiasts around the globe, the AMW Annual Collection shines an important spotlight on world-class Sauvignon Blanc.

The Annual Collection selection process is robust and transparent, including wines being tasted blind and the expert panel changing each year. Tasting guidelines are provided in advance by AMW committee member Sophie Parker-Thomson MW to ensure all wines are given a thorough assessment. The ultimate aim is for the judges to select wines that enhance the reputation of Marlborough, determined on the day as the best representation of the region - for the season, variety and style.

AMW is delighted to confirm its 2023 Annual Collection panel will comprise three highly regarded wine professionals: Jane Skilton MW, Erin Larkin & Andrea Martinisi. All active and distinguished industry members, they will be well placed to determine this year’s ultimate collection.

Jane Skilton continues to be one of New Zealand’s most esteemed Master of Wines. She is an educator of the next generation through her leading wine school NZSWS and is a sought after wine judge, critic and columnist.

The inaugural AMW Annual Collection (announced October 2022) articulated that AMW members are committed to their craft. “There are some very clever, thoughtful winemakers in Marlborough,” said Master of Wine Emma Jenkins, following her tasting of near 70 Sauvignon Blancs for the 2022 collection. “And this was a year that they rose to the challenges of the season to deliver wines of quality and character.”

“Benchmarking is very important in the (beverage) industry, in all categories,” said fellow inaugural judge, Liz Wheadon. “Without knowing what good/great looks like, it is hard for new entrants - or those striving to do better - to know which direction to go in. Highlighting success, breeds success.”

Composed of both classic and alternative styled Sauvignon Blancs, “the Annual Collection makes a case for Marlborough excellence,” says Amanda McRae AMW Executive Officer. “The aim is to highlight the quality and distinctive flavour on offer when consumers choose 100% Marlborough.”

The Annual Collection is open to all members with the structured blind tasting ensuring that every wine is evaluated for its merits in the glass. The final results of the tasting will be announced early October.

Introducing the Wine Map of Marlborough

Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) is excited to announce the launch of the Wine Map of Marlborough, a beautifully designed reference tool that delineates the Marlborough wine growing region for the first time.

It has been fifty years since the first commercial vineyards were planted in Marlborough, with significant growth occurring and vines now occupying around 30,000 hectares. “Naturally, subregions with distinct microclimates and stylistic features have been identified over this time,” says John Buchanan, AMW chair. “And the Wine Map of Marlborough represents the first genuine attempt to map these in a detailed way.”

AMW is a member-led organisation established in 2018 to protect the integrity, authenticity and brand value of wines produced within its region.

The map project was driven by the Marlborough Wine Map Collective (MWMC), a team of five AMW members including Simon Waghorn of Astrolabe, Matt Thomson and Sophie Parker-Thomson MW of Blank Canvas, Ivan Sutherland of Dog Point, Brian Bicknell of Mahi and Brendan Neylon of Rapaura Springs. “We robustly debated and defined the current subregional hierarchy of Marlborough,” says Matt Thomson.

Over a two-year period, the ensemble worked in consultation with Wellington based cartographer Roger Smith of Geographx and local designer Megan Boreham of Eye Catcher Designs.

“The resulting ‘Wine Map of Marlborough’ is a vital resource in understanding the subregional detail and diversity of Marlborough,” says John. “We look forward to making it available to a wider audience, including industry colleagues, wine educators, and engaged consumers.”

Co-owners of Blank Canvas, who championed the development of the wine map, say that Marlborough winemakers have been talking about subregional identity for a long time. “We have, however, lacked the key tool to be able to communicate it effectively to our audience.” says Matt. “Without a universal and accurate map the default is a dangerous assumption that Marlborough is all the same. We know that is definitely not the case and we know this map will now enable everyone to start a more nuanced journey to understand sub-regionality and quality within our diverse region.”

The first edition of the Wine Map of Marlborough is a start in engendering greater understanding in the detail of Appellation Marlborough. “Marlborough’s hugely diverse soils, micro-climates and ultimately terroirs, mean producers can craft wildly different expressions of sauvignon blanc here,” says Matt. “The vision is that wine enthusiasts will be able to use the map to pinpoint the subregional style they desire, whether that be the lemongrass-accented Blind River, passionfruit and blackcurrant-driven Dillons Point, or elderflower and white currant expression of Condors Bend. And there are many more.”

“We are incredibly grateful to the Marlborough Wine Map Collective for bringing this stunning and comprehensive map to fruition,” says Simon Barker, AMW committee member. “It had become abundantly clear that Marlborough needed to document its wine growing subregions and regional subsets. They are key aspects of our winemaking pedigree and provide context and definition to our diverse wine region.”

“Marlborough’s rapid success and market growth has occurred this past half century without any real controls in place, and certainly not the regulations the appellations and wines of Europe must comply with to protect the provenance, quality and value of their products,” says Matt. “This situation has conjured up a dangerous tipping point where the dilution of the brand value of Marlborough is occurring because of the dilution of the product itself.”

“The Marlborough Wine Map is an important step in creating some guidelines and understanding around our variegated region,” says Simon. “The Marlborough appellation can not and should not be simplified to the provincial boundary, we must take a lead from pioneering wine regions who’ve defined their land by geology and geography.”

Marlborough wine displaying the AMW icon on its label provide consumers with an assurance of origin and authenticity. “These wines have been certified as a true expression of our region and contain 100% pure Marlborough fruit. This is an integral mark. A mark of integrity.” says John. “The Marlborough Wine Map supports AMW’s efforts of promoting quality Marlborough wine and clearly illustrates the importance and interest of

Wineries across the globe hold their breath in the lead up to Wine Spectator’s annual Top 100 Wines announcement. Originating in 1988, the magazine describes the list as a collection of the most exciting wines discovered by their editors over the previous year. This year’s coveted list named four wines from New Zealand including two certified Appellation Marlborough Wine members.

“It is heartening to see Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc being recognised by the team at Wine Spectator magazine,” says John Buchanan, chair of Appellation Marlborough Wine. “It is a variety that our region excels at growing and the calibre and diversity that members are today producing is rather exciting. Greywacke and Astrolabe produce exceptional examples, representing the best of Marlborough, and they exemplify what AMW was set up to respect and protect.”

Wine Spectator editors select their Top 100 based on quality, value, (USA) availability and excitement. ‘Excitement’ has been defined by the magazine as one of the most important components, describing it as “the passion and story behind the wines - the X-factor”.

Securing the lucky 13 ranking, Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc 2021 was the highest scoring New Zealand wine on the Top 100 wines of 2022 list. It is Greywacke’s fourth time being included in Wine Spectator’s short list: their 2014 Pinot Noir ranking #64 in 2017, the 2011 Pinot Noir achieving #48 in 2013, and the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc placing #53 in 2012.

Astrolabe has also been recognised previously by Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list and were excited to secure their third placement. “We were really chuffed to get this amazing recognition for our Awatere Sauvignon Blanc,” says Jane Forrest-Waghorn, owner and founder of Astrolabe Wines. “Our family live and work in Marlborough because we believe in the potential to make amazing wines here, and it is thrilling to be placed on this list alongside some of the best wines in the world. It is great to see the high standard of New Zealand wine being celebrated internationally.”

Named after New Zealand’s most prolific bedrock, Greywacke is owned and operated by Kevin and Kimberley Judd. Kevin is a pioneering and highly regarded winemaker who helped raise Marlborough’s wine profile through his 25 years as Chief Winemaker at Cloudy Bay Vineyards. The decision to establish Greywacke in 2009 was driven largely by Kevin and Kimberley’s desire to craft small and distinct parcels of wine that shone a spotlight on Marlborough subregions. Their love of Marlborough is evident in all that they do, from their preference of fermenting with wild yeast through to living alongside their Greywacke Vineyard and Farm where they personally care for its entirety.

The Appellation Marlborough Wine Annual Collection was launched earlier this month to highlight the calibre of Sauvignon Blanc being produced across the Marlborough region. Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) Chair Ivan Sutherland says “The quality and distinctive flavour on offer when you choose 100% Marlborough is unparalleled. Each year our annual collection will be representative of the season past, whilst showcasing the talented producers in our region and our distinctive terroir.”

The challenging conditions of the 2022 vintage, with Marlborough and New Zealand as a whole witnessing untimely weather events, seasonal labour shortages and an ongoing pandemic, underscore the need to be selective when choosing between wines.

“I enjoyed the number of wines that had not tried too hard,” says Liz. “They knew what they had in terms of the quality of the grapes and made beautifully balanced wines.”

Emma says she was curious to get a good look at the 2022 vintage, being one that challenged most regions throughout New Zealand. “It was an impressive looking collection of wines, making it hard to choose the final 12.” Cameron agreed saying that there were 18 wine that could easily have made it to the final selection.

The judges’ final selection showcases Marlborough’s hallmark purity of fruit, freshness, and vivid, juicy acidity says Emma. “It also covers the broad range of styles now typical across the region.”

“There are some very clever, thoughtful winemakers in Marlborough,” says the master of wine. “And this was a year that they rose to the challenges of the season to deliver wines of quality and character. We were impressed by the number of wines with texture and elegance, and think wine-lovers will find much to enjoy.”

Throughout the blind tasting, conversations around Marlborough subregions, regional subsets, and wine styles began. It came as no surprise that with such a large numbers of Sauvignon Blancs side by side that the judges were drawing connections and conclusions. “Wines that were a bit edgy grabbed my attention,” says Cameron.

“I am really pleased AMW is continuing to refine and improve the initiative’s philosophy and principles via their own internal quality control tastings and with this independently-selected tasting,” says Emma. “Now more than ever, it is really important to put a stake in the ground emphasising the values and aspirations of Marlborough as a region. It’s easy to forget just how youthful Marlborough is as a region, only just approaching its 50th anniversary of vines in the ground, and it is very heartening indeed to see AMW members’ commitment to integrity and quality, for they highlight the most important path forward to its future.”

Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) is proud to announce the Appellation Marlborough Wine Annual Collection. “This is an opportunity for AMW to put the lens back onto the serious side of Sauvignon Blanc,” says master sommelier Cameron Douglas.

Comprised of both classic and alternative styled Sauvignon Blancs, the Annual Collection will ‘make a case’ for Marlborough excellence says Amanda McRae, AMW’s co-ordinator. “The aim is to highlight the quality and distinctive flavour on offer when you choose 100% Marlborough.” The selection of AMW certified wine will be determined by a trio of judges each year, incorporating a representative from media, off-premise and on-premise. “We are delighted to welcome Emma Jenkins MW, Liz Wheadon, and Cameron Douglas MS as our inaugural tasting panel,” says Amanda. “They are experienced judges and leaders in their sector.”

“I was very chuffed to be asked to judge the AMW Annual Collection,” says Emma Jenkins MW. “I have followed AMW’s progress with interest since its inception, as I believe it is a very important and useful initiative for the region. To see AMW grow and gain in rigour and integrity is really pleasing and I’m looking forward to now being a small part of this progress.”

Glengarry general manager Liz Wheadon says that the Annual Collection is an opportunity to identify those achieving top notch quality. “Benchmarking is very important in the industry, in all categories. Without knowing what good (great) looks like, it is hard for new entrants or those striving to do better to know the direction to go.”

Cameron says that too many quality focussed Sauvignon Blanc producers - whether it's specific vineyards, parcels of fruit or permaculture managed sites - are getting lost in the noise. “This is the perfect time to showcase the best of the Sauvignon Blanc variety and 2022 vintage from a region of growing diversity and competition.”

The Annual Collection is open to all members with the structured blind tasting ensuring that every wine is evaluated for its merits in the glass.

Emma hopes the Appellation Marlborough Wine Annual Collection will demonstrate the quality and depth of certified Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. “There is no doubt that Marlborough is world class terroir for Sauvignon Blanc, and I’m hoping we will put together a collection that not only provides a benchmark for what’s in the market now, but also helps to spur on those who are serious about showing just how good Marlborough wines can be.”

The Annual Collection will provide a halo effect for the entirety of AMW. “It gives our forward thinking organisation another opportunity to celebrate its people and the breadth of our maturing region,” says Amanda.

“Highlighting success, breeds success,” says Liz. “Marlborough is a dynamic region that is full of colourful characters. I’m looking forward to next weeks tasting and getting under the skin of the region.”

The Annual Collection tasting is set for September 14th with the final selection and judges feedback presented by months end.

Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) is extending and strengthening its guardianship of New Zealand’s largest wine growing region by updating its criteria for inclusion from 2022.

           •	The internationally recognised and trademarked organisation has expanded certification to

           all Marlborough grown varietals.

           •	From early this year,

each submitted Sauvignon Blanc is tasted blind by an independent panel to authenticate the wine as a true representation of the region

           .

“Appellation Marlborough is a pioneering and evolving organisation,” says Ivan Sutherland, AMW chair and co-founder of Dog Point Vineyards. “These recent refinements strengthen our quality standards and add further credibility to the original values of our appellation.”

“Every wine comes through the tasting panel reinforced as a great example of Marlborough,” says AMW committee member and Lawson’s Dry Hills’ group marketing manager, Belinda Jackson. “This additional process strengthens our proposition that AMW wines are authentically Marlborough.”

Appellation Marlborough Wine was introduced in 2018 to protect ‘Brand Marlborough’ by establishing standards and criteria that provide reassurance to the consumer and enhance the credibility of member’s wines. To date, AMW has focused its attention on the region’s most iconic varietal, Sauvignon Blanc, seeing it as the most at risk. AMW’s 50 plus members voted that the organisation was now in a position to include all varietals under their accreditation umbrella. They also agreed that the tasting of all submitted Sauvignon Blancs was an important refinement of their certification process.

There has always been a tasting component to the AMW certification process, determined by (source vineyard) yield, but extending it to all Sauvignon Blancs will increase credibility of the brand, says Belinda. “Members agree that regardless of yield a wine could still be misrepresentative.”

Sophie Parker-Thomson MW, AMW committee member and co-owner of Blank Canvas Wines, says some trade have asked where the “teeth” of AMW are. “How are you guaranteeing quality?” Tasting was an important next step, she says. “We’ve created a robust, independent, and blind tasting process to ensure that all AMW certified Sauvignon Blancs will be representative of -Marlborough. AMW stands for quality, integrity and authenticity. We want to offer consumers an assurance of a wine with typicity and concentration.”

Sophie says it was important to start with Sauvignon Blanc when looking to protect the Marlborough brand and reputation. “Sauvignon quality has been scrutinised the most, so it is paramount that AMW provides additional assurance, via this objective tasting process, that all wines bearing the AMW certification are worthy of it. And because Marlborough is not just about Sauvignon Blanc, it makes sense for AMW to now extend to other varieties as well.”

AMW coordinator Amanda McRae says several members have commenced the process of certifying their 2021 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. “It has always been the plan to incorporate the broader Marlborough wine offering, but we wanted to start AMW with our region’s flagship varietal and get all the right protocols in place. Just a few years in and it’s clear that AMW provides value to our Sauvignon Blanc. Members were quick to agree that it was time to extend the certification programme to other varietals.”

The inclusion of all Marlborough grown varietals under AMW will further enhance the region’s reputation as a quality wine producing appellation, says Ivan. “Marlborough’s distinct cool climate growing conditions are equally well suited to the production of other quality wines.” Sauvignon Blanc was the reason for AMW’s establishment, agrees Belinda. “But AMW is a Marlborough organisation, so it is important that we protect our industry's future in its entirety and respect our precious and unique wine styles.”

Member producers are committed to ensuring all AMW certified wines are representative of high-quality Marlborough says Ivan. “We are working collectively to safeguard Marlborough’s wine reputation and future.”

I almost feel as though 2021 is the year when Marlborough re-discovered its soul. Too many recent vintages, particularly of Sauvignon Blanc, have yielded too many rather aimless wines that seemed unsure of what they were trying to achieve, or wines that seemed almost perversely determined to deny the fabulously enticing fruit quality that wine lovers around the world crave in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Had Marlborough lost confidence in itself to do what it can do so brilliantly – produce the best, snappiest, most tingling and scented Sauvignon in the world?

Well, nature gives and nature takes away. 2021 Sauvignons are truly delicious. But there aren’t enough bottles to go around. New Zealand has been suffering from climate change like everyone else, and the already dry Marlborough region has had three drought years in a row. You might say – oh, but they can irrigate, the Wairau aquifer is one of the most plentiful in the world. Up to a point. You’ve got to have water coming off the hills and mountains upstream to fill the aquifer. This supply has been under increasing threat for some years, although, thankfully, 2021 wasn’t too bad. But there are many parts of Marlborough desperately dependent on irrigation. As the flows drop in rivers like the Wairau and Awatere, it becomes ever more difficult to access extra water and raise a decent crop.

But that’s a long term challenge. 2021 had more immediate issues. The world was already complaining in 2020 that there wasn’t enough Sauvignon to go around. So what we didn’t need was icy cold nights and frosts in September and even October, which hammered some vineyards quite badly, some less so.

Come December you want warm settled weather for your vines to flower and set a good crop of grapes. This didn’t happen. Erratic weather and cold nights meant that the flowering was all over the place, and bunches were very irregular.

So you know the number of berries on the vine is going to be compromised. What you then don’t want is a droughty, windy summer which means the berries you do have are going to be small and low on juice. And 2021 was Marlborough’s 3rd consecutive year of drought. All of which meant a ridiculously early harvest, but there’ll be about 40% less Marlborough Sauvignon on sale from 2021.

Any good news? Yes. The stuff’s fantastic. It’s not often I say – rush out and buy some Sauvignon before the stocks run out – but this year you’ll have to. Stocks of the best wines WILL run out. Once people try one bottle they’ll be leaping for their credit cards to secure more. And technically you could age quite a few of these, but take one more gulp of these gorgeous liquids and you’ll be saying – why would I want to?

2021, A Vintage to Celebrate and Protect

There’s no place in the world like Marlborough, and no wine in the world that tastes like ours. Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) believes that it is worth protecting.

“The wines from our 2021 vintage are by far the most concentrated and powerful examples of Sauvignon Blanc that I’ve tried to date,” says Matt Fox, Rapaura Springs Viticulturist. “The quality across the board is outstanding! Wines from fellow AMW producers are looking just as impressive, it’s an exceptional year to be a consumer buying Sauvignon.”

Marlborough’s record low crops coupled with an impressive global consumer demand has created a significant shortage in wine from 2021. Some producers will be tempted to increase their production by blending fruit from outside the region into their Marlborough labelled releases. By law this is permitted but it is prohibited under AMW’s member criteria. Now is the time to #AskforAMW and to check labels for the AMW icon which guarantees a wine is 100% grown in the world-renowned Marlborough region. Ivan Sutherland, AMW Chairman and owner of Dog Point Vineyards says, “By purchasing AMW certified wines, consumers will have the reassurance that their wines were crafted with the prime objective under the AMW logo; to protect the integrity, authenticity and reputation of NZ’s largest wine region.”

A warm September saw Marlborough’s 2021 growing season commence early with bud burst in Sauvignon Blanc all but complete by month’s end. But mother nature had a few surprises up her sleeve and awoke the region on September 30th with an extended period of frosty temperatures which resulted in spots of frost damage across the region. “It was the first of the climatic events that severely reduced the number of grapes harvested in our region,” says Jules Taylor of Jules Taylor Wines. “But from Christmas onwards we experienced a traditional Marlborough summer with long periods of dry, sunny weather.” Some of the lowest bunch weights since 2007, Jules says they harvested very clean small berries. “Fruit had great concentration, we just wish there was more to go round!”

The importance of Appellation Marlborough Wine certification has never been so evident. Marlborough’s exceptional 2021 vintage deserves to be protected. “With a quality mark and accreditation like AMW, the commitment to the consumer is clear and together gives rise to maintaining provincial integrity and authenticity from vine to bottle and beyond,” says Catalina Sounds’ Winemaker Matthew Ward.

Marlborough’s 2021 Sauvignon Blanc’s are sure to enhance the region’s international reputation. “As a winemaker and a member of AMW I’m proud to highlight 100% Marlborough grown and bottled in NZ,” says Matthew Ward. “The quality of fruit from 2021 has created wines with great weight, concentration and balance. Vintages of this quality don’t come about regularly and tasting an AMW wine will give the consumer a snapshot of what a truly great and challenging vintage can taste like.”

Appellation Marlborough Wine celebrate an outstanding 2020 vintage

A fantastic summer with hot days and cool nights has produced some outstanding Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs from the 2020 harvest.

Vibrant, bristling with energy and ripe concentrated flavours is how Marlborough’s winemakers are describing the wines – many of which are bottled and ready for release.

Appellation Marlborough Wine members say the season was one of the finest Marlborough had ever experienced with favourable weather throughout the growing, ripening and harvesting season.

Fruit quality from the vintage was the best winemaker Dave Clouston from Two Rivers had seen for more than 10 years. “It was outstanding,” he said. “A prolonged Indian summer with cool nights led to expressive wines with great natural acidity. The season produced pristine fruit with ripe concentrated flavours. We have never been more excited and more proud to release an Appellation Marlborough Wine. Our Two River Convergence Sauvignon Blanc has real potential.”

AMW, which now boasts 52 members representing more than a third of Marlborough wineries, was established in 2018 as a way of protecting Marlborough’s reputation and giving consumers confidence in the provenance of their wine. Choosing a Marlborough wine with the AMW logo means consumers are assured the wine is 100% Marlborough, grown sustainably and bottled in New Zealand.

Ivan Sutherland, owner of Dog Point Vineyards and chair of AMW, says the brand mark is now trademarked in all major wine consuming countries, with “very favourable support” from wine writers and the trade, “with the general comment being ‘why has it taken so long?’”.

Sauvignon Blanc is well established as one of the world’s most sought-after white wines. Crucial factors for many Marlborough growers in the grape growing and wine making process are authenticity, integrity, sustainability and provenance – the four pillars represented by the AMW brand mark.

AMW members praised the quality of this year’s vintage particularly given the challenges many of them worked through to get their crop harvested and processed.

The country went into lockdown just as harvest was starting which presented massive challenges with stringent Covid-19 rules in place including rigorous social distancing. Wineries dealt with the situation admirably and the vintage will go down as one of the most extraordinary Marlborough has ever had.

Jim White from Cloudy Bay said the 2020 vintage was memorable because of what wineries went through to make it happen and noteworthy as one of Cloudy Bay’s best vintages.

“Mother Nature gave us incredible conditions in the vineyards throughout the year and the fruit that came into the winery was as perfect as we could have wanted,” he said. “The Sauvignon Blanc shows a remarkable balance and refined acidity alongside the vibrant fruit qualities that we always want to see.”

Whitehaven’s chief winemaker Peter Jackson described the company’s Sauvignon Blancs as being “classical examples” thanks to a text book run into harvest with plenty of sunshine. “The resulting wines bristle with energy, purity and precision,” he said.

Nautilus Estate’s Clive Jones said classic Marlborough autumn weather of cool nights and warm days prevailed through harvest. “This allowed for slow flavour development and the ability to fine tune Sauvignon picking decisions to maximise flavour potential,” he said.

At Barkers Marque, Simon Barker said 2020 was one of the top two vintages since the company began in 2006 mainly due to the “fabulous run of weather”. “I’m excited at the prospect of this being one of our best vintages,” he said. “It is worth mentioning how well our industry complied and adapted (to Covid-19) during harvest which can be stressful at the best of times.”

AMW is excited about the release of their 2020 Sauvignon Blancs which promise to be some of the best and most vibrant to come out of Marlborough with zingy and zesty flavours that leap out of the glass.

Sophie is one half of Blank Canvas, one of AMW’s founding members and is in the process of completing her MW studies. We sat down we her (pre lockdown!) to talk about the industry, study and why AMW is so important for Marlborough.

What made you pursue a career in the wine industry?

Quite simply a deep-rooted love of wine. I have always been fascinated by the subject, admiring that it encompasses so many fields of study which provides endless inspiration – history, anthropology, legal, science, economics, marketing and of course the creative element of winemaking itself. At high school I had persuaded myself that pursuing a traditional profession was what I wanted to do but once in the throes of law I could see that ultimately the wine industry gratified my personality so much more. The characters you find working in the industry are often eccentric, always well-travelled and, more often than not, inspiring. They are seldom driven by financial success which is refreshing in an ever-increasing materialistic and superficial world.

While gender balance has come a long way, what more could we be doing to encourage diversity in the wine industry?

This is probably going to sound controversial, but I think we are now in danger of making men feel excluded in the industry because there seems to be a proliferation of women-only initiatives. I certainly recognise there was a need to encourage women into the industry and for the vast majority of time it has been vastly male-dominated. Of course, fundamentally I’m an absolute champion of diversity and I’m incredibly happy to see women in many more roles throughout the hierarchical chain of the industry, but I think we just need to ensure we maintain balance. I think it helps to ask “would this be seen as discriminatory in the eyes of the law?” and “how would I feel if I was a member of the opposite sex?” We should be encouraging participation and providing mentorship no matter what gender, race or religion. As an industry and as a society we should be fighting sexism, racism and discrimination consistently, and in every form it takes.

You’ve chosen to pursue formal study in wine. In this digital age of information-on-demand why do you believe structured formal study in wine is still important?

Structured formal study is so important. The digital age has heralded an era where we need to have our own internal information filter on permanently. Prior to this we could just be constant receivers and digesters of information knowing that it had to go through a rigorous process such as peer-review or at least screening by a third-party publisher/editor. Information on the internet is frequently erroneous, emotively charged and lacking in academic rigour. Anyone can be a self-described expert in any field and if they’re tapped into the right networks they can wield significant, dangerous influence. One just needs to look at politics to see what catastrophic direction we are heading in. So, I believe having credentials and putting in the hard work beforehand is essential before gaining a pedestal.

Why do you believe the creation of Appellation Marlborough Wine is important for the industry?

Marlborough’s meteoric rise to international stardom occurred over a relatively brief period, and consequently it has attracted its fair share of opportunistic punters. Typically these individuals and companies have no vested interest in the region itself and are purely trading off the reputation and demand for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc at the detriment of quality and many stakeholders’ hard work. Practices such as bottling offshore, blending with other non-Marlborough wine, and producing wine from over-cropped grapes with a low-level of ripeness or in dubious health all jeopardize the quality reputation of the region and our premium Marlborough wine brand.

It’s only natural that the people who have a vested interest in the region and a long-term view want to protect it from the few damaging profiteers and rogues. The creation of AMW is important therefore for the future success of the regional industry and is symptomatic of the evolution of Marlborough as an internationally acclaimed wine region. If you look to other regions, particularly in the Old World, this exact same process has taken place. However, because we are starting afresh and are not bound by predecessor appellation systems we can learn from our counter-parts in Europe and determine the most robust, fair and effective system.

Blank Canvas was one of the first wineries to join AMW when it started in 2018. Why did you choose to join?

Appellation Marlborough Wine was created as by a like-minded group of producers who sought to safeguard the quality and reputation of the region and its wine. We chose to be a part of this because we could see the need for it (for the reasons above). We were disheartened at seeing an increasing number of “ghost brands” overseas who were trading off the Marlborough reputation that we and our fellow producers work so hard at building. Our wines are all single vineyard wines as we believe in the focus and purity a single site offers. This philosophy and our desire to showcase the quality Marlborough can produce is exactly why we aligned ourselves with this group, which is essentially a promise of provenance and quality to consumers.

What advice would you give to today’s wine professionals who want to make their mark on the industry?

Invest the time and resources in gaining credentials. Keep an open mind, don’t be afraid to ask questions – especially ‘why’, but with respect, and challenge orthodoxy. Arm yourself with knowledge, be genuine and humble and uphold your own truth.

And finally, what excites you most about the future of the NZ industry?

I’m excited about the evolution and maturing of our NZ wine regions. Internationally consumers and trade want more detail – from the sub-regions and single vineyard sites to the winemaker’s philosophies and raison d’etres. Kiwis are traditionally not the best marketers and resort to our entrenched self-effacing nature. But as our vines get better with age, so too does the effectiveness and strength of our message as an industry. Both digital marketing and traditional channels such as print and film have helped this but we also need authoritative and competent wine industry leaders delivering a consistent and universal message.

Appellation Marlborough Wine comes of age

Champagne, Burgundy, Beaujolais, the French developed classification systems for their wines years ago and now the Kiwis have clamped down, creating their own appellation for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

An appellation denotes a specific set of criteria a wine must adhere to, to be able to carry the mark.

With almost 300,000 acres of Sauvignon Blanc planted worldwide, Sauvignon Blanc has solidified itself as one of the most popular white-wines.

Regions like France’s Loire Valley and Marlborough, New Zealand, have put Sauvignon Blanc on the radar.

And its significance to NZ cannot be overlooked. 85% of all wine exported from New Zealand is Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, with a total export value reaching a record $1.83 billion according to the 2019 Annual Report of New Zealand Winegrowers.

The crucial factors are quality and authenticity. A renowned wine region’s reputation for quality is critically important to protect for its producers.

Appellation Marlborough Wine™ was created in 2018 with a strict certification process that the region’s producers are able to apply for.

There are now 49 members and over 90 certified wines from some of the region’s most iconic wine companies.

The appellation is now trademarked in all the key global wine markets and it is this legal recognition that sets it apart from other new world certification practises.

To bear the AMW brand, members have to ensure the wine is made from grapes grown entirely in Marlborough and cropped at or below set parameters, established according to soil type and vine density variability. If a proposed wine contains any portion exceeding that level, it must be approved by an independent panel of qualified, experienced local producers.

The wines must come from grapes harvested from vineyards certified by Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, and must be bottled in New Zealand, under New Zealand regulations.

Chair of Appellation Marlborough Wine Ivan Sutherland, owner of Dog Point Vineyards, said there were now over 90 Sauvignon Blanc labels wearing the quality mark, giving consumers confidence in the provenance of their wine.

“Appellation Marlborough Wine is about protecting the reputation this region has worked hard to build. It provides the wine buying public of the world with an assurance they can see and trust.”

“We’ve now trademarked the brand in all of the key global wine markets which has been a huge undertaking. This is the first step in protecting New Zealand wine that has now become a global icon.”

Cloudy Bay Estate Director Yang Shen said the AMW brand was a necessary evolution for a maturing wine industry, with its increasing range of producers, wines, markets and motivations.

“Our members know that it is vital to protect the integrity of our industry, recognising that Marlborough wine is globally unique, extraordinary and 100% worth protecting.”

Marlborough’s wine industry has welcomed the development of a quality mark to protect the authenticity, integrity and sustainability of Marlborough wine.

Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) was launched in June last year and now has 45 members, including some of the region’s most iconic wine companies.

Speaking at the AGM last week, chair Ivan Sutherland, owner of Dog Point Vineyards, said there were already 30 Sauvignon Blanc labels from the 2018 vintage wearing the quality mark, giving consumers confidence in the provenance of their wine.

“Appellation Marlborough Wine is about protecting the reputation this region has worked hard to build. It provides the wine buying public of the world with an assurance they can see and trust.”

Sutherland said wine writers and distributors had welcomed the initiative warmly, with their most pressing question being ‘why did it take so long to eventuate?’

To bear the AMW brand, members have to ensure the wine is made from grapes grown entirely in Marlborough and cropped at or under stipulated levels, set according to the season, the variety and the land. Where yields exceed the level set, a wine can be certified if it gets the nod from an experienced tasting panel.

The wines must come from grapes harvested from vineyards certified as sustainable, and must be bottled in New Zealand, avoiding the risk of adulteration.

Sutherland updated the members on work to obtain the necessary international trademarks, which took considerably more time than the New Zealand trademark, which was settled before last year’s launch.

AMW went live with its website on the day of the AGM, and he called on members to consider how to showcase the quality mark at trade and consumer events, helping build confidence in the brand as a signature of 100% Marlborough wine.

A new initiative under the brand name Appellation Marlborough Wine (AMW) was launched today to safeguard Marlborough’s wine reputation.

The primary aim is to protect the integrity, authenticity and brand value of wines produced in Marlborough. It is about fostering the good reputation of the region’s wines and establishing standards and criteria to enhance this. The Licensor of AMW is an Incorporated Society with its members (Licensees) being companies involved in the Marlborough wine industry.

To date 36 producers have committed to the AMW brand and the subsequent Licence Agreement. This quality focused, history making initiative is about being inclusive, with a number of other wine companies having expressed interest in being foundation Licensees

The certification criteria for wines bearing the AMW brand under the licence agreement will comprise the following standards and quality parameters:

100% grapes grown in Marlborough and bottled in NZ.

Comprise 100% of grapes grown in vineyards which are part of a recognised sustainable viticultural programe.

From grapes grown at an appropriate cropping level with the prime objective of enhancing quality and the Marlborough name. Each year the Licensor will notify the Licensee of the cropping level which will be expressed as tonnes of grapes per net producing hectare and be pertinent to each separate vineyard parcel of grapes.

If grapes used to produce the certified wine do not comply with the Licensor’s desired cropping level, then the Licensee may submit the wine with any necessary supporting evidence to the Licensor’s wine tasting panel which at its absolute discretion may permit that wine to become certified. The tasting panel shall be entirely set by the licensor and the decision of that panel shall be final and binding.

There is an agreement between the Licensor and Licensees (clause in the Licence Agreement) that there will be the ability to carry out random inspections and audit of certified wine. There was unanimous agreement to protect the integrity, authenticity and brand value of wines produced in Marlborough under AMW and that it will be substantially based on the honesty and integrity of members and on the correctness of certifications which members will be required to give. It was agreed that to underpin these arrangements there needs to be a system for inspections and audit.

Licensees have received information on the description of the brand and the associated intellectual property that may be used on labels, cartons and with advertising and promotional material. The committee acknowledges the industry financial support from Wineworks Marlborough Ltd and the Cresswell Jackson NZ Wine Trust.
